OUR HISTORY
Why we are
On the 7th February 2018, when the Barbados Pharmacy Council certified a then 21 year old girl to be a Registered Pharmacist, Kayla Phillips became the youngest practicing Pharmacist on the island at the time.
What is even more noteworthy. This young lady had left school with only average grades and many persons, including senior members of her family, had tried to discourage her from pursuing this field of study as it was considered the most difficult course then being offered by her College.
Kayla realized early in her first semester that she could not approach her studies at College with the same reliance on her good memory and good luck that had served her so well in passing her exams in High School.
She realized that she had to put in the work and study hard if she was to prove everyone that doubted her, wrong. She studied hard even volunteering in a village Pharmacy on Saturdays to get hands on experience.
And she did prove her detractors wrong!
Just telling her that she could not do something was motivation for her to work harder than she had ever done before to succeed!
She graduated, within the stipulated time, not having to repeat any courses and ahead of many of her peers with years experience working in Pharmacies.
Such was the determination, dedication and commitment of this young lady in achieving her goal.
These attributes Kayla has brought to PHILLIPS PHARMACY which she registered as a business in Barbados in 2018.
Again, she was cautioned that she needed to gain more experience before venturing out on her own. However, after 2 years working for one of the large Pharmacy groups in Barbados, she has already secured property and submitted building plans for a state-of-the art brick and mortar Pharmacy to be constructed in St. Thomas.
These plans are awaiting building approval from the Planning Office.
Having already established relationships with all of the major Pharmaceutical Suppliers on the island and never being one to sit around and wait, she decided to launch Phillips Pharmacy Online. The middle of a global pandemic is the ideal time to launch a business with its core purpose being keeping Barbadians Healthy and Safe. Its island-wide delivery service is an answer to the challenges of the reality facing the world today where Staying Home means Staying Safe.
Or so you would think!
Phillips Pharmacy was contacted by the Ministry of Health and informed that current regulations governing pharmacies in Barbados did not recognize the existence of an online only pharmacy and that a physical location was required.
Again Kayla was not to be deterred from fulfilling her dream.
Within 2 weeks Phillips Pharmacy had its temporary location outfitted and had passed inspection by Ministry of Health personnel. However, it still took over 3 months for Phillips Pharmacy to be given the go ahead to operate in Barbados.
Phillips Pharmacy is HERE NOW! And is the model for what the future of Pharmacies in Barbados will be.
